Serum and renal calcium levels should be followed to detect the development of renal stones. Calcium should not be given to patients who already have renal stones.

Magnesium is a mineral that has been determined to be especially important in cardiac function. Even slight deficiencies may prolong the QT interval and lead to a very dangerous form of ven-tricular tachycardia called torsades de pointes.
