This is more intense than infiltration anesthesia because the anesthetic agent comes in contact with all of the nerve endings surrounding the area. This type of block is often used for tooth extractions. Topical would not be appropriate because it would not absorb deeply enough to block pain impulses in the root of the tooth. Nerve block would not be possible for oral surgery.
