Answer to Question 1

These kingdoms were modeled on the much larger empires of the Upper Niger . . . prospering through trade with Europenotably, slaves for manufactured goods--the elite of these kingdoms were remarkably cosmopolitan.

Answer to Question 2

Instead of being a society organized around extended families (the Ewe), the Mali was a centralized, hierarchically organized empire with distinct social classes. The jalolu had a secure place within the Mali empire serving wealthy patrons.
