At the western edge of the Mande heartland, many small kingdoms formed along the Gambia River. What were these kingdoms modeled after? What brought these kingdoms into contact with Europe in the 1700s?

 These kingdoms were modeled on the much larger empires of the Upper Niger . . . prospering through trade with Europenotably, slaves for manufactured goods--the elite of these kingdoms were remarkably cosmopolitan.

Answer to Question 2

 Instead of being a society organized around extended families (the Ewe), the Mali was a centralized, hierarchically organized empire with distinct social classes. The jalolu had a secure place within the Mali empire serving wealthy patrons.
