Answer to Question 1

Medical Surveillance. A medical surveillance program under the supervision of a licensed physician must be provided for all employees who 1) use negative pressure respirators, or 2) perform Class I, II, or III jobs for a combined total of 30 or more days per year. Medical surveillance is also required for employees exposed at or above the STEL or PEL. The medical surveillance program must include comprehensive physicals performed at least annually and any other tests recommended by the physician in charge of the worker's case.

Answer to Question 2

Initial Exposure Assessments. Initial exposure assessments must be conducted by the designated competent person, and they must be completed in time to ensure that 1) all control systems are working properly, and 2) the assessment data are collected soon enough to allow compliance with all OSHA requirements should a problem be detected.
