According to the equipartition theorem, the molar heat capacity of a monatomic ideal gas
  a. depends on temperature.
  b. is larger than the molar heat capacity of a diatomic ideal gas.
  c. does not depend on which monatomic gas is used.
  d. depends on the molecule's rotation.

Question 2

The Maxwell velocity distribution indicates that

a.the total translational kinetic energy of all of the molecules in a sample of an ideal gas is (3/2)(kT)(V).
b.the mean velocity of the molecules in a sample of an ideal gas in any one direction is zero.
c.molecules of an ideal gas move with the same velocity at a given temperature regardless of molecular mass.
d.it is impossible to know the mean velocity of the molecules in the sample.

  e. the energy of a molecule of an ideal gas depends more on its position than on its velocity.

Answer to Question 1

c.
This statement is true. The molar heat capacity of a monatomic ideal gas is 3R/2, independent of which molecule is used.

Answer to Question 2

b.
The velocity includes the direction. The average of the velocity, therefore, should be zero since there is no preferred direction for the random assortment of speeds to be traveling

For about 100 years, scientists thought that peptic ulcers were caused by stress, spicy food, and alcohol. Later, researchers added stomach acid to the list of causes and began treating ulcers with antacids. Now it is known that peptic ulcers are predominantly caused by Helicobacter pylori, a spiral-shaped bacterium that normally exist in the stomach.
