 Avoid perpetuating stereotypes and suspend judgments.

 Cultural heritage may influence how a family perceives a child born with a disability, but it is important to look at the family rather than assume a stereotype.
 If the family practices a religion, the values of the religion may affect the familys reactions, particularly in terms of guilt or fate.
 The central principle is to view each family as an individual unit to ascertain what meaning family members ascribe to the illness or disability.
