Answer to Question 1

Students might address these topics:

Self-awareness  the process of identifying ones own values.
Learn about others cultural and sociocultural perspectives.
Apply ones self-awareness and the information learned about other cultures in practice.
Avoid perpetuating stereotypes and suspend judgments.

Answer to Question 2

Students should touch on the following basic points and may provide examples from their own experience:

Cultural heritage may influence how a family perceives a child born with a disability, but it is important to look at the family rather than assume a stereotype.
If the family practices a religion, the values of the religion may affect the familys reactions, particularly in terms of guilt or fate.
The central principle is to view each family as an individual unit to ascertain what meaning family members ascribe to the illness or disability.
