Where is each of the countries in this region located, and what geographic features influence the lives of people living in each country? (See map on page 258 for country locations.)

IndiaThe Himalayan Mountains originally protected this region. The Indus Valley provides farmland.

BangladeshIts low elevation at the Bay of Bengal makes it vulnerable to monsoons and tidal waves, and it is often devastated with famine.

Sri LankaSri Lanka is an island with areas that support farming.

BhutanIts location in the Himalayas has protected it from invasions and allowed a tranquil existence.

TibetNorth of Nepal and Bhutan, Tibet is separated by the mountains. This location allowed China to invade Tibet in 1959 . Tibet is now part of China.

NepalThis country is mostly mountainous, with some flat lands for tigers and elephants. A lack of land for the population has led to deforestation.

PakistanThe division of Pakistan from India was religious (Pakistan is Muslim). Pakistan has both access to the Arabian Sea and the mountains of Kashmir, which has caused many border disputes with India.
