Answer to Question 2

Right after heart surgery patients typically have very poor appetites. Heart surgery patients seem to have a problem with decreased taste acuity for several days post-op. The goal is to get them to eat to regain their strength as soon as possible; therefore, most anything is allowed the first couple of weeks past surgery in some hospitals. Once the patient is healed, diet instruction begins. The RD handled her encounter with Mr. F extremely well and I am in perfect agreement with her decision. However, it would have been more appropriate for Mr. F to have been informed of the type of meals he was going to receive and why prior to receiving the meals.
