Answer to Question 1

The ketone level will indicate if excessive fat is being burned. If so, then the diet is too low in carbohydrate and thus the developing fetus may not be getting ample carbohydrate. In addition, the elevated ketones would be toxic to the developing fetus.

Answer to Question 2

Oral iron can cause upset stomach, nausea and possibly vomiting. Gastric pH can affect absorption with a lower pH being more desirable for absorption. Antacids can decrease absorption. Other metals (Zn, Cu, Ca, Mg) in excess can interfere with absorption.
