Do you agree with the prescription of a 1000 to 1200 kcal diet for this patient after the fast is over? Discuss your answer. If you do not agree, what kcal level do you recommend?

Question 2

When the fast is over, the patient slowly returns to a regular diet. What is the rationale for this?

Answer to Question 1

If the fast went well and the patient adjusted to this calorie level, and protein stores were good, I would continue with this level while monitoring protein and continuing with the multivitamin/mineral, Ca, etc. If the patient loses a significant amount of weight as fat and as muscle mass, his caloric and protein intake may have to increase.

Answer to Question 2

This is the time to employ behavior modification techniques. The client should be taught behavior modification from the beginning of the fast for employment after the fast is over. Also, the GI tract has to adjust to solid food again and this takes time.
