Calculate Mr. D's basal energy expenditure using the Harris-Benedict equation. Determine a stress factor to multiply this by and determine total energy needs

Question 2

Compare the RDAs for a 51 YO, a 73 YO, and a 90 YO. Considering the results of these comparisons, what do you think about the sufficiency of the RDAs?

Answer to Question 1

BEE = 66 + 13.7 x wt + 5 x ht - 6.8 x age
= 66 + 13.7 x 60.5 + 5 x 182.9 - 6.8 x 73
= 66 + 828.8 + 914.5 - 496.4
= 1312.9 x stress factor

Answer to Question 2

They are the same for all three classifications. This should speak for itself for the sufficiency of the RDAs. There are many individuals in their eighties and nineties who are very active while some in their sixties are vegetating in nursing homes. Do they have the same nutritional requirements?
