Answer to Question 1

Hgb, Hct, MCV, and MCHC indicate possible protein/iron deficiency. Serum Alb and TLC indicate protein deficiency. All of the above could also indicate severe energy deficiency.

Cr is 0.9 mg/dL. A low Cr frequently indicates a lack of lean body mass. With severely decreased somatic protein, there is not enough muscle to produce a higher level of Cr. This is the case with Mr. D. The circumstances involved with this include: 1) Anorexia, probably due to lack of taste, depression, and excessive medicines. 2) Improperly fitting dentures. 3) Lack of a soft diet.

Answer to Question 2

Before hydration:
WBC = 4.3 x 103/mm3 Lymphocytes = 18
4.3 x 103 = 4300 x 18 = 774/mm3

After hydration:
WBC = 4.7 x 103 = 4700 x 19 = 893/mm3

Your skin wrinkles if you stay in the bathtub a long time because the outermost layer of skin (which consists of dead keratin) swells when it absorbs water. It is tightly attached to the skin below it, so it compensates for the increased area by wrinkling. This happens to the hands and feet because they have the thickest layer of dead keratin cells.
