Mrs. K is a 69-year-old widow who lives alone. At her clinic visit she confessed to the nurse that she is embarrassed by her frequent diarrhea and bloating after meals. At times she also feels sweaty or dizzy.

Because of this problem she no longer goes out with friends to eat, which in the past has been an enjoyable source of socialization. The nurse advises her to continue to go out with her friends but also to: 1. Eat smaller portions and avoid extra fluid with meals. 2. Avoid eating all day before she goes out and then eat a large meal. 3. Eat food cooked at home since many restaurants have additives that can cause diarrhea. 4. Eat foods with simple rather than complex carbohydrates.

Answer to Question 1

1
Clients with dumping syndrome should be advised to eat several small meals portions throughout the day with snacks to avoid rapid gastric emptying. Avoiding food promotes a poor nutritional intake resulting in numerous problems including a fatty liver and malnutrition, but does not prevent rapid transit of food into the intestines following a large meal. Foods high in simple carbohydrates also promote rapid transit and poor absorption of food in the intestines.

Answer to Question 2

A
Weight gains exceeding 1 pound in a day are probably caused by excess fluid. The body cannot accumulate lean body mass or body fat this quickly and accumulation of this amount of feces is highly unlikely.

Every flu season is different, and even healthy people can get extremely sick from the flu, as well as spread it to others. The flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. Every person over six months of age should get an annual flu vaccine. The vaccine cannot cause you to get influenza, but in some seasons, may not be completely able to prevent you from acquiring influenza due to changes in causative viruses. The viruses in the flu shot are killed—there is no way they can give you the flu. Minor side effects include soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given. It is possible to develop a slight fever, and body aches, but these are simply signs that the body is responding to the vaccine and making itself ready to fight off the influenza virus should you come in contact with it.
