Answer to Question 1

C
Feedback:
Studies link a traditional Mediterranean diet with a decreased risk of CHD, improvements in obesity and type 2 diabetes, and improvements in MetS components. The diet includes a moderate intake of alcohol with meals; however, the recommended amount should not lead to an increase in alcoholism.

Answer to Question 2

C
Mechanical breakdown of food occurs in the mouth during chewing and in the stomach as the food is mixed by muscular action. By the time food reaches the large intestine it is already bro-ken down and most of the nutrients have been absorbed. The liver and pancreas produce secre-tions that help with chemical but not mechanical breakdown of food. Food passes through the esophagus largely unchanged so it is not involved in breakdown.
