The canons of ethics adopted by the federal judicial conference exemplify the type of rules regulating judges throughout the United States. The purpose of regulation is to make sure that judges are not engaging in conduct that is prejudicial to the effective operation of the courts or that the judge is not suffering from a physical or mental disability that prevents him or her from carrying out judicial duties.

Although the Supreme Court, like the appellate courts, is primarily a court of appellate jurisdiction, original jurisdiction exists when cases affect ambassadors, public ministers, and consuls or when a state is a party.
