Blood pressure is a measure of the force exerted against the walls of the vessels by the blood flowing through them. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and usually is expressed in two numbers. Ideally, blood pressure is 120/80 or below. The higher number reflects the systolic blood pressure, the pressure exerted during the forceful contraction of the heart. The lower value, diastolic blood pressure, is taken during the heart's relaxation phase, when no blood is being ejected.
