Personal distance
 Close phase1-1/2 to 2-1/2 feet; comfortable if the people know one another
 Far phase2-1/2 to 4 feet; arm's length

Social distance
 Close phase4 to 7 feet; impersonal business
 Far phase7 to 12 feet; more formal communication

Public distance
 Close phase12 to 25 feet; can get away
 Far phase25 feet or more; set around important public figures

The distance that is accepted is based on the relationship between people involved and the
circumstances. Depending on the physical nature of the training, environment, and the type of
training to be given, the chef supervisor and the kitchen team's personalities can be categorized
within the personal and social distance scales.
