The Medicare Hospital Insurance program, is related to Social Security, and is intended to
provide the same type of security for health care. The employer also contributes 1.45 of the
employee's pay to Medicare, but there is no contribution base limit for this contribution. Both
Social Security and Medicare benefits are available to the employee at retirement if they have
met the age requirement.
