Answer to Question 1

Pittman's presence on the mountain was clearly a mixed blessing. On the one
hand, she was the conduit through which Scott Fischer's Mountain Madness
Guided Expeditions would gain favorable publicity. However, her presence put
pressure -- real or imagined -- on Fischer to put publicity concerns ahead of
safety concerns.

Answer to Question 2

Some of Exxon's reactions to the Alaskan oil spill were logical but were perceived
differently by key publics. For example, CEO Lawrence Rawl felt he could more
effectively deal with the oil spill by remaining at the company's headquarters.
However, by staying away from scene of the disaster, Rawl opened himself to
criticism from residents and environmentalists that he was uncaring. And since
Rawl was the most visible representative of Exxon, the entire company was
viewed as uncaring. For Exxon's critics, that perception -- fair or not -- became
the reality.
