Answer to Question 1

How could it not catch the attention of the national news media? It has all of the
elements of a great human interest story: A child, acting out of love for his family,
gets a big corporation to change the way it does business. The media, stung by
the criticism of the negativity of much of the news, are always looking for offbeat
good news to report. By providing this story to the media, Rand McNally created
a situation that was mutually beneficial.

Answer to Question 2

The victims of Katrina needed to hear how the government was responding to
their immediate needs. They also needed words of encouragement and hope.
That's what leaders do. Unfortunately, during the first days after the storm, this
kind of leadership was in short supply. And when the victims heard these words,
they seemed shallow. That's because during crises  as it is in more normal times
 actions speak louder than words.
