Answer to Question 1

Case attrition refers to the phenomenon of cases disappearing or being weeded out of the criminal justice system prior to trial. Generally, only about 55 percent of all felony arrests make it to trial or disposition. The courtroom work group plays a key role in case attrition, specifically the prosecutor. Prosecutors frequently dismiss cases due to lack of evidence or merit. Three facets of discretion play a role in attritionlegal judgments, policy priorities, and personal standards of justice. The courtroom work group basically aspires to devote their limited resources to the most serious cases.
