Generally, only about 55 percent of all felony arrests make it to trial or disposition. The courtroom work group plays a key role in case attrition, specifically the prosecutor. Prosecutors frequently dismiss cases due to lack of evidence or merit. Three facets of discretion play a role in attritionlegal judgments, policy priorities, and personal standards of justice. The courtroom work group basically aspires to devote their limited resources to the most serious cases.
