Answer to Question 1

Answer: In an experiment to test Freuds assumptions about the relationship between repressed thoughts and dreams, a group of undergraduates was asked to suppress thoughts about a specific person just before falling asleep. The subjects were randomly assigned to one of three presleep thought conditions. They were instructed to not think about their target person, to think a lot about the target person, or not think about the target person but take note if they did. On waking they were to record their dreams. Subjects who were instructed to suppress all thoughts about their target person dreamed significantly more about that person that subjects in the other two conditions, which supports theory about the nature of repression.
