Answer to Question 1

Inmates receive a variety of services. Inmates receive medical services during incarceration. Many states contract out medical services to private companies to ensure that inmates are given proper medical treatment. Some prisons have a fee-for-medical-services policy, so some of the expense is put back onto the offender.

Answer to Question 2

The purpose of vocational training is to prepare inmates for jobs in the community upon release. There are a variety of vocational training programs offered in prisons. Some of these programs include printing, barbering, welding, meat cutting, machine shop work, electronics, baking, plumbing, and automotive repair. Participation in vocational programs is seen as a means of reducing recidivism, based on the premise that the acquisition of vocational skills such as goal-setting, motivation, commitment, and learning of technical and nontechnical knowledge increases ex-offenders' employment opportunities upon release.
