Some of these programs include printing, barbering, welding, meat cutting, machine shop work, electronics, baking, plumbing, and automotive repair. Participation in vocational programs is seen as a means of reducing recidivism, based on the premise that the acquisition of vocational skills such as goal-setting, motivation, commitment, and learning of technical and nontechnical knowledge increases ex-offenders' employment opportunities upon release.
