There are two main categories of identity theft. This is the most common type of identity theft, but is typically less costly. New account fraud occurs when an offender uses the victims personal information such as Social Security numbers, birth dates, and home addresses to open new accounts in the victims name, make charges indiscriminately, and then disappear. They may also use stolen personal information to obtain government, medical, or other benefits to which the criminal is not legally entitled. New account fraud is less common but imposes much greater costs and hardships on victims.
