This results in more of a disciplinarian and supervisory role rather than social service provider (the original intention of a probation officer).

Answer: Answer should include: Net widening involves additional supervision and criminal sanctions for more offenders, rather than diversionary techniques. This is not only expensive in regard to the cost for the criminal justice system, but also stigmatizing for the offender.
