Motor vehicle thefts decreased 3.3 percent in 2013 when compared with the previous year. Motor vehicle theft represents a considerable cost to society. According to the FBI, more than 4.1 billion was lost nationwide to motor vehicle thefts in 2013. The average dollar loss per stolen vehicle was 5,972. Also, in 2013, 73.9 percent of motor vehicle thefts were automobiles.
