Answer to Question 1

A service factor is a constant used to multiply the horsepower by in the selection of a gearbox. They will vary according to the type of prime mover, the duty cycle (how many hours per day in operation), and the type of service in which the gearbox is to be used (uniform load, moderate shock load, heavy shock load, and extreme shock load).

Answer to Question 2

The American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA) establishes standards to help standardize the design and application of gear products. The AGMA is made up of manufacturers and technical members who assure gear product users that products built, selected, and applied in accordance with AGMA standards will perform well.
