Phenylketonuria is a condition in which infants lack the liver enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase, which is necessary for the metabolism of an amino acid, phenylalanine. If the condition is present and is not treated, infants become hyperactive, begin seizures between 6 and 18 months, and become intellectually disabled.
