Answer to Question 2

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation replaces the blood-forming stem cells that have been destroyed by high-dose chemotherapy or radiation therapy. These procedures may be used to treat leukemia, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma. If possible, stem cells are collected from the patient's bone marrow or circulating blood before chemotherapy or radiation treatment begins so that a separate donor is not required. If another person's cells are used, the patient must take immunosuppressant drugs to prevent graft-versus-host disease, in which the donor's immune cells attack the recipient's tissues, and graft rejection, in which the recipient's immune system rejects the donor cells.
