In osmotic diarrhea, unabsorbed nutrients or other substances attract water to the colon and increase fecal water content; common causes include high intakes of poorly absorbed sugars (such as sorbitol, mannitol, or fructose) and lactase deficiency (which causes lactose malabsorption). In secretory diarrhea, the fluid secreted by the intestines exceeds the amount that can be reabsorbed by intestinal cells.
