Nutritional risk factors for constipation include: 1) Dehydration, 2) Medications, such as opioid and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, 3) Calcium and other mineral supplements and antacids, and 4) Diets low in fiber.
Nutritional remedies include those that increase dietary fiber in tandem with increased fluid. One needs fiber, fluid, and muscle tone together to promote bowel movements. Insoluble fiber sources include bran and cellulose in fruits and vegetables. Integrating activity and exercise training can improve peristalsis and alleviate constipation as well as bloating and flatulence.
