Answer to Question 1

Breakfast is the most commonly skipped meal, with up to 27 percent of adolescents skipping breakfast on any given day. Skipping breakfast can dramatically decrease intakes of energy, protein, fiber, calcium, and folate due to the absence of breakfast cereal or other nutrient-dense foods commonly consumed at breakfast. Additionally, teens who skip breakfast or do not commonly consume orange juice, fortified breads and ready-to-eat cereals are at an increased risk for having a low consumption of folate.
