Answer to Question 1

Health experts estimate that approximately 18 percent of children age 6 to 11 are obese (meaning that their body mass indexes are greater than the 95th percentile). The short- and long-term health and social consequences of childhood obesity are of great concern to parents and health professionals. Because excessive childhood weight gain is likely to continue into adolescence and adulthood, it is important to understand the factors that contribute to this growing trend. Subsequently, weight-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and elevated blood lipids are now becoming increasingly prevalent and even commonplace among America's youth. Preventing a child from becoming overweight takes considerable effort at home and at school. It is essential to teach and model the importance of physical activity and good nutrition. There are as many healthy food choices available today as there are unhealthy ones.
