 Copper and iron have many similarities in terms of food sources, absorption, and functions
 Iron and copper compete for the same transport proteins in enterocyte cell membranes

Iron affects:
 the blood's ability to transport oxygen
 cognitive development in infants and children
 intellectual performance
 pregnancy outcome
Iron is also important for optimal immune function and body temperature regulation.
