Answer to Question 1

Lifestyle can influence the development of diabetes. Case in point: The National Institutes of Health has been studying the Pima Indians living in both the U.S. (Arizona) and Mexico for the last thirty years. Despite the fact that both have similar genetics, only those living in the United State's obesogenic environment (abundant food supply, reduced physical activity, large portions, and readily available calorically-dense foods) developed diabetes. The Mexican Pima Indians still live in a remote area of Mexico and continue to consume a diet and live a lifestyle similar to those of 100 years ago.
