Answer to Question 1

ANS: There are several types of vegetarians, each with a range of acceptable foods. Lacto-ovo-vegetarians are the broadest group and eat dairy products and eggs. Lacto-vegetarians will eat dairy foods but not eggs, while ovo-vegetarians will eat eggs but not dairy foods. Vegans are the strictest type and will not eat any animal foods, including eggs and dairy as well as meat, fish, and poultry. Finally, semivegetarians eat meat, poultry, and fish only on occasion.
Vegetarians, particularly vegans, need to take care to incorporate protein, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, vitamin A, and omega-3 fatty acids into their diets.
