Younger people produce Vitamin D more efficiently from their skin than older people. They only need to be out in the sun for 5-10 minutes each day. People with darker skin might need more sun exposure because they have more melanin pigment that blocks UV light from their skin. This would reduce their Vitamin D production rate as compared to a more fair-skinned individual. People in highly polluted areas may also need longer exposure due to loss of UV light from smog or airborne particles.
