Answer to Question 2

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), also called chronic lung disease of prematurity, is characterized by pulmonary inflammation and impaired growth and development of the alveoli. All babies with BPD have received supplemental oxygen for at least 28 days and are less than 32 weeks gestational age. Babies characterized with mild BPD do not require supplemental oxygen at 36 weeks post-menstrual age or discharge. Factors associated with BPD include acute respiratory distress during the first week of life, required oxygen therapy or mechanical ventilation, and persistent respiratory changes.
