Leukotrienes are chemical mediators produced by the body that contribute to the development of asthma. Leukotrienes, which are synthesized from arachidonic acid, modulate the inflammatory response resulting in tissue edema, mucus secretion, smooth-muscle proliferation, and powerful bronchoconstriction .
