Answer to Question 1

Solutes in body fluids include both electrolytes (ions) and other molecules. Electrolytes dissociate in fluid to form one or more charged particles. Other molecules, such as glucose, protein, urea, lactate, and other organic acids, remain stable in solution. The major electrolytes in the body are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, bicarbonate, phosphate, and sulfate. Ions with a positive charge are referred to as cations, and negatively charged ions are called anions.
