Answer to Question 1

Adults consume and excrete some 1-1/2 to 3 quarts of water a day. Water enters the body in liquids and foods, and some water is created in the body as a by-product of metabolic processes. Water leaves the body through the evaporation of sweat, in the moisture of exhaled breath, in the urine, and in the feces.

Although most of the water we take in comes from juice, milk, soft drinks, and other beverages, including tap water, foods also add considerable amounts of water to the diet. For example, water makes up as much as 85 to 95 percent of fruits and vegetables. Adults are advised to consume 1.0 to 1.5 milliliters of water from all sources for each calorie expended. For instance, if you expend 2,000 calories a day, you need approximately 2 quarts of fluid.
