SELF-HANDICAPPING: Acting to create the very conditions that will tend to produce a failure. An example would be if a person expected to do poorly on a first date, he or she might not allow enough time to properly groom and arrive late and unkempt for the date. People behave in such ways (nonconsciously) in order to provide an excuse for the failure that they anticipate.
