Among the interrelated factors that contribute to health disparities are:
a . Socioeconomic status. Minorities often have lower levels of income and education, reside in poorer housing, live in unsafe neighborhoods, and have fewer opportunities to engage in health-promoting behaviors.
b. Insurance issues. Lack of insurance has frequently been identified as a cause of health disparities.
c. Culture. Some cultural beliefs and health practices of minorities may contribute to health risks, with the degree of acculturation contributing to decreased health advantages.
d. Access to and utilization of quality health care services. Many minorities do not have access to and/or use quality health care services.
e. Discrimination/racism/stereotyping. Some minorities may experience discrimination or racism and experience psychological distress, depressive symptoms, substance use, and physical health problems as a result.
f. Environment. Minorities are more likely to live in polluted environments and work in hazardous occupations.
