Answer to Question 1

An opinion. Chapter 8 mentions several factors that may influence body weight: 1) Eating habitsthe amount of food we consume, including increased portion and plate sizes and more calories from excessive snacking; 2) societal influenceseating away from home more often than in the past, and perhaps a greater social acceptance of the snacking that increases the contribution of calories to our diets; and 3) sociocultural and psychological factorsbeing obese influences levels of self-esteem and confidence. Despite the many factors that may or may not influence body weight, society generally assumes that the reason for obesity is excess food intake and lack of physical activity.

Answer to Question 2

August struggled with finding employment and performing simple activities with her children. After choosing and receiving gastric-bypass surgery August noted that she hoped normal-weight people would not judge obese people as individuals simply lacking willpower. Throughout her life, August suffered stress related to her obesity, and despite her gastric-bypass surgery she still suffers mental and emotional stress about others suffering from obesity. It appears that August will struggle with lifelong issues related to her weight problems.

Every flu season is different, and even healthy people can get extremely sick from the flu, as well as spread it to others. The flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. Every person over six months of age should get an annual flu vaccine. The vaccine cannot cause you to get influenza, but in some seasons, may not be completely able to prevent you from acquiring influenza due to changes in causative viruses. The viruses in the flu shot are killed—there is no way they can give you the flu. Minor side effects include soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given. It is possible to develop a slight fever, and body aches, but these are simply signs that the body is responding to the vaccine and making itself ready to fight off the influenza virus should you come in contact with it.
