Answer to Question 1

An MBS study, or modified barium swallow study, is a study that helps SLPs and the medical staff obtain further information about swallowing ability. It is performed in the radiology department (not at bedside); the SLP will give the patient various foods to eat or drink that are mixed with barium (this makes the bolus show up on the x-ray).
This evaluation of swallowing should reveal functional alterations to the structures involved, the degree of efficacy of swallowing in its various stages, adequate protection of lower airway, the coordination between breathing and swallowing, and any penetration of the food bolus in the tracheal-bronchial passage.
