Using the JNC 8 guidelines, how is the diagnosis of hypertension made? What blood pressure readings are used to identify normal BP, stage 1 hypertension, and stage 2 hypertension?

Answer to Question 1

 At least two measurements of blood pressure
 Taken after patient has been seated quietly for at least 5 minutes in a chair with feet on the floor
 Arm supported at heart level
 Using an appropriately sized cuff
 Diagnosis:
- Normal: < 120/80 mmHg
- Stage 1: 140-159/90-99 mmHg
- Stage 2: >160/>100 mmHg

 age > 75 years
 CKD
 cardiac failure
 liver disease
 diabetes
 nephrotoxic medications
 sepsis
 hypovolemia
